About Czech Republic
Also known as Czechia, the Czech Republic is a landlocked nation state in Central Europe bordered by Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Poland. The Republic covers an area of 78,866 sq km with a mostly temperate climate. It has 10.6 million inhabitants and the capital, Prague, has over 1.2 million residents. Czechia includes the historical territories of Bohemia, Moravia, and Czech Silesia.
In the 19th century, the Czech lands became the industrial powerhouse of the monarchy and were subsequently the core of the Republic of Czechoslovakia, which was formed in 1918 following the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire after World War I.
The Czech part of Czechoslovakia was occupied by Germany in World War II, and was liberated in 1945 by the armies of the Soviet Union and the United States. The Communist Party of Czechoslovakia won the 1946 elections. Following the 1948 coup d'état, Czechoslovakia became a one-party communist state under Soviet influence. On 1 January 1993, Czechoslovakia peacefully dissolved, with its constituent states becoming the independent states of the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
The Czech Republic ranks as the 6th most peaceful country, while achieving strong performance in democratic governance.
WEC ministers in the Czech Republic through Betel, our ministry to addicts.
Betel is a WEC ministry principally focussed on reaching men and women around the world trapped in a life of brokenness through long term addictions and homelessness. At the core of Betel’s ministry are Church Planting, Mission, Evangelism and Discipleship.
Since its humble origins in Madrid around 30 years ago Betel has now grown into over 100 cities in 24 different nations of the world. At the core of its ministry is the reaching out to marginalised people caught up in substance abuse, prostitution and homelessness. Only the good news of Jesus Christ can truly bring about freedom from the destructive lifestyle common in many nationalities and cultures around the world.
In Betel the message of the cross is brought alive through direct love and support. Entrants join our communities free of charge to live and work alongside one another as they learn to live a Christ-centred lifestyle. Residents (known as Betelitos) are trained in a wide range of life-skills through working in one of our various businesses. This not only gives them an opportunity to help fund their own recovery but also to develop key life skills such as punctuality, a good work ethic and working under authority.
