About Recruiting Latinos

Within the Americas, WEC’s emphasis is on mobilizing and recruiting new workers, and on church planting amongst indigenous peoples.  We operate in three major languages (English, Spanish and Portuguese) and among 15 different ethnic groups, mostly in Brazil and Mexico.

God is on the move in Latin America. The turning of many to Christ in the last couple of generations is now reaping a harvest of workers for the nations. Their hearts are ignited with passion that is expressed outwardly.

Latinos are deeply devoted to the purity of the Truth of the Word. They take it at face value and teach it in that way. They have witnessed God’s power and miracles and are not afraid to expect Him to continue to work in that way.

But many challenges lie on the road for Latino Christians from the Americas who want to serve the Lord in other countries. Their churches are not as affluent as English-speaking ones, and they struggle to support a missionary.

WEC are seeing a growing number of Latinos join us in taking the Good News of Jesus to the ends of the earth! And what a richness they bring to our teams!

About Mexico

Mexico is a federal republic in the southern portion of North America. It is bordered to the north by the United States; to the south and west by the Pacific Ocean; to the southeast by Guatemala, Belize, and the Caribbean Sea; and to the east by the Gulf of Mexico.

Covering almost two million square kilometers (over 760,000 sq mi), the nation is the fifth largest country in the Americas by total area, and the 13th largest independent state in the world.

With a population of 130 million Mexico is the most populous Spanish-speaking country in the world, and the 2nd most populous nation in Latin America.

Mexico comprises of 31 states. The metropolitan area of the capital  has a population of 21.2 million people, making Mexico City the most populous metropolitan area in the Western Hemisphere. Other metropolises include Guadalajara, León, Monterrey, Puebla, Toluca, and Tijuana.

Mexico has the 15th largest nominal GDP. It is classified as an upper-middle income country by the World Bank. By 2050, Mexico could become the world's 5th largest economy.

History

Mexico’s civilisations include Olmec and Maya. Early Olmec ceramics suggest that well-developed writing existed in Olmec times (1200-400BC).

Mexico was later the heart the Aztec Empire (1300-1521AD). The Aztec were noted for practicing human sacrifice on a large scale.

The Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire began in 1519 when Hernán Cortés arrived at the port in Veracruz with 500 conquistadores. In his search for gold and other riches, Cortés decided to invade and conquer the Aztec empire.

Unintentionally introduced by Spanish conquerors smallpox ravaged the Aztecs in the 1520s and killed at least 3 million natives as they had no immunity. Severely weakened, the Aztec empire was easily defeated by Cortés and his forces on his second return in 1521. This was the beginning of a 300-year-long colonial era during which Mexico was known as Nueva España (New Spain).

The deaths caused by smallpox are believed to have triggered a rapid growth of Christianity in Mexico and the Americas. Many of the surviving Aztecs believed that smallpox could be credited to the superiority of the Christian god, which resulted in their acceptance of Catholicism and yielding to the Spanish rule throughout Mexico.

Mexico fought for independence between 1810-21. [Read more Mexican history here] .

Biodiversity

Mexico ranks fourth in the world in biodiversity and is one of the 17 megadiverse countries. With over 200,000 different species, Mexico is home of 10–12% of the world's biodiversity. Approximately 2,500 species are protected by Mexican legislations and 67 national parks.

Tourism

Mexico is among the most visited countries in the world according to the World Tourism Organization and it is the most visited country in the Americas after the United States. The most notable attractions are the Mesoamerican ruins, cultural festivals, colonial cities, nature reserves and the beach resorts. The nation's wide range of climates, from temperate to tropical, and unique culture – a fusion of the European and the Mesoamerican – make Mexico an attractive destination.

Due to its rich culture and history, Mexico ranks 1st in the Americas and 7th in the world by number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
