Nurse for Pamé people in Mexico

Work in a medical service, amongst the Northern Pamé ethnic people, alongside an experienced doctor.

The Northern Pamé (also called Xi'úi) are a people group of around 7,300 in the San Luis Potosi area of Mexico with only portions of Scripture.

Most of the Pamé continue to live in poverty with little agriculture or industry in the region, with poorly constructed housing.

A nurse would enable expansion of this developing service. Live among them to study their language and the culture.

What's it like to be a medical missionary?

"Three mornings a week I work at a local hospital. Together with a local nurse we encourage women with newborn babies to breastfeed their infant. We have only a few minutes with each mother yet it is a great opportunity to share God’s love with these young women at a very special, precious and at the same time vulnerable moment of their lives." "I have loved my time at Sibanor with WEC. I have had the opportunity to learn new skills, develop in confidence as a doctor, and grow in my Christian faith. It has been a huge privilege to be welcomed by the Gambian people and to serve alongside the amazing missionary team here." (Dr Will)

About Mexico

Mexico is a federal republic in the southern portion of North America. It is bordered to the north by the United States; to the south and west by the Pacific Ocean; to the southeast by Guatemala, Belize, and the Caribbean Sea; and to the east by the Gulf of Mexico.

Covering almost two million square kilometers (over 760,000 sq mi), the nation is the fifth largest country in the Americas by total area, and the 13th largest independent state in the world.

With a population of 130 million Mexico is the most populous Spanish-speaking country in the world, and the 2nd most populous nation in Latin America.

Mexico comprises of 31 states. The metropolitan area of the capital  has a population of 21.2 million people, making Mexico City the most populous metropolitan area in the Western Hemisphere. Other metropolises include Guadalajara, León, Monterrey, Puebla, Toluca, and Tijuana.

Mexico has the 15th largest nominal GDP. It is classified as an upper-middle income country by the World Bank. By 2050, Mexico could become the world's 5th largest economy.

History

Mexico’s civilisations include Olmec and Maya. Early Olmec ceramics suggest that well-developed writing existed in Olmec times (1200-400BC).

Mexico was later the heart the Aztec Empire (1300-1521AD). The Aztec were noted for practicing human sacrifice on a large scale.

The Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire began in 1519 when Hernán Cortés arrived at the port in Veracruz with 500 conquistadores. In his search for gold and other riches, Cortés decided to invade and conquer the Aztec empire.

Unintentionally introduced by Spanish conquerors smallpox ravaged the Aztecs in the 1520s and killed at least 3 million natives as they had no immunity. Severely weakened, the Aztec empire was easily defeated by Cortés and his forces on his second return in 1521. This was the beginning of a 300-year-long colonial era during which Mexico was known as Nueva España (New Spain).

The deaths caused by smallpox are believed to have triggered a rapid growth of Christianity in Mexico and the Americas. Many of the surviving Aztecs believed that smallpox could be credited to the superiority of the Christian god, which resulted in their acceptance of Catholicism and yielding to the Spanish rule throughout Mexico.

Mexico fought for independence between 1810-21. [Read more Mexican history here] .
