During the first two weeks of July, Arts Release hosted ‘Welcome Donostia!’, an arts outreach to the city of Donostia in northern Spain. The project proved highly effective in sharing the good news and in spotlighting important issues, particularly of welcome, belonging and being displaced.
‘Welcome Donostia!’ centred around a visual art exhibition at a local gallery, with a range of bold, high quality pieces on the theme of ‘Welcome’. Many of the 200-plus visitors to the exhibition commented on the standard of the work and on the importance of its message, stayed to discuss the art pieces with team members and heard something of the gospel from them.
There’s a growing sense of excitement about using the arts in mission in Spain
Local music groups performed moving songs on the plight of refugees, also sharing their christian faith in a simple yet powerful way. And street outreach in the city led to many significant conversations about spiritual matters.
Arts Release’s Lorraine Latin comments: “We’re very excited to see what God does next! Lucia, the lead artist for the project, has developed relationships with a number of artists through the exhibition, which have real potential for working together in future and for sharing the good news. And there’s a growing sense of excitement about using the arts in mission in Spain.”
